Choosing a Machine Shop: Key Criteria for Your Product’s Success

For many organizations, company culture can be difficult to define – and more difficult still if you have to define it with just one word.

Not so for Travis Massey, owner of High Mark Machining, a versatile machine shop in Utah’s West Valley City, just west of Salt Lake City.

“If I were to describe our company culture in just one word, it would be dedication,” Massey said. “We’re dedicated to making sure our customers get what they need. Not just parts, but solutions. I take personal responsibility for making our customers happy. And I say that sincerely; it’s not just words.”

That kind of dedication has been a hallmark of Travis’s endeavors, whether he was riding bulls growing up in a rodeo-loving family, as a soldier in the United States Marine Corps, or now as a small business owner. Despite his varied background, Travis knew that using his talents in engineering and machining was where he ultimately needed to be.

“The idea of making things that make the world a better place, of enabling other people to innovate and do something that matters, that’s what gets me excited to go into work every day,” he said.

As an innovation partner to many companies, Travis has seen the satisfaction of a job well done, as well as the occasional remorse when manufacturers try to take a low-cost, low-quality approach to machining.

“More than once I’ve had a prospective customer choose another machine shop because they could get a lower price, only to have them come back to High Mark because of quality issues and delays,” Travis said. “Sometimes companies just don’t realize how successful they could be if they do it right the first time.

“I never try to compete with low-cost, low-quality foreign vendors,” Travis continued, “Instead, I offer my customers this commitment: First, we always aim to exceed their expectations. Second, we’ll deliver high-quality products on time and within budget. And finally, that we’ll do it right the first time.”

As a disabled veteran who served his country at home and abroad, Travis Massey understands the value of American freedom and industry. Even when the days are stressful and deadlines are looming, he loves helping American entrepreneurs bring valuable products to market.

“I love the bigger picture of machining,” Travis said. “I love working with people as a team and having it matter. I love machining.”
